Harrow of the Week: The Survivor

The end is the beginning. 

This week’s Harrow card, The Survivor, at first appears to be a sign of ill omen. A battered warrior sits on a throne, surrounded by the ghosts of his fallen comrades. At his feet lie the treasure from his adventures as well as the tools he used to help acquire them: a sword, a shield, and a magic staff. Despite the gold and riches at his feet, the Survivor seems to be staring off into space.

While this may look bleak on the surface, in reality, this is a card of courage and perseverance in the face of tragedy. The Survivor comes from the suit of Shields, the suit associated with Constitution and endurance. It is also aligned Neutral Good, which is the alignment of pure altruism and compassion. Certainly, the Survivor has had his endurance put to the test and survived, even if his spirit may feel broken.

Harrow of the Week: The Vision

Knowledge is power. 

This week’s Harrow card, The Vision, hits like a bolt from the blue. Quite literally, in fact. A hand is forcefully directing said bolt directly into the head of a shocked man, who has dropped his tools. The man is in obvious pain, and the force of the bolt is so great that it appears that he may have been struck blind.

Knowledge is both a dangerous and wonderful thing, as is inspiration and wisdom. For this reason, the Vision is aligned Chaotic Neutral. Wisdom is not bound by rules, and certainly not by human laws. At the same time, it is neither inherently good or evil. It just IS. It’s the implementation that has a morality attached to it. The Vision is a card of tremendous insight, but it is not concerned with how or if we can handle that insight. The 12th-century abbess and mystic Hildegard of Bingen was known for her vivid, inspirational visions, but these same visions also took a tremendous toll on her health.
