Live at the Eye 2014 Concert Series Launches

  Posted By admin

Eye of Horus is thrilled to announce our concert series, Live at the Eye, for 2014. Expect to see a number of local musicians, but also some exceptional national artists. We’ve hosted individual concert events in the past in the Inner Sanctum and since music is an integral part of spiritual practice, we wanted to expand on the kinds of good vibrations here at the Eye by offering a regular concert series. There are currently five acts confirmed. (Click here to see the full line up.) Although all the acts are unique, you will see themes of myth, nature, and magic expressed to some degree by all of them. The Live at the Eye concert series starts in April with a lineup of performers, so you three for the price of one.

Crow Call, Ellie Bryan and Sister Species Live at the Eye

Friday, April 25th, 6:30-9pm – Click here to Get Tickets

Crow Call is Ellie Bryan and Peter Ruddy, a folk duo from south Minneapolis that combines traditional Folk/Americana genres with minor chords and subtle metal influences. On the 5-string banjo and 12-string acoustic guitar they perform dark originals that draw influences from ancient mythology and personal experiences, alongside old-time traditional songs, blurring the dichotomy of the old and the new; the traditional and the modern. Together they write deep, thought provoking music that transports the listener to personal place, as well as up-tempo traditional songs that transport the listener back in time. Check out their Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/crowcallmpls

Ellie Bryan performs ancient and contemporary folk songs using the Mouth Bow, Appalachian. Mountain Dulcimer, and Banjo. Known as “the first stringed instrument”, the Mouth Bow is creates a distinct and haunting sound by uniting a stick and a string to resemble a hunting bow, which is then strummed while leaning against the jaw. Similar to a jaw harp, the instrument uses the cavity of the mouth as a resonance chamber to change the overtones of the note. Born and raised in South Minneapolis, Ellie Bryan of Crow Call first discovered this instrument in 2010 and began her musical journey by making and playing these bows.

After Crow Call and Ellie Bryan perform their sets, Sister Species will take the stage, or rather the floor, since this is an intimate venue and there isn’t a stage. You can find them on facebook as well, at facebook.com/sisterspecies Sister Species is comprised of:
Abby Kastrul– vocals, guitar
Emily Kastrul– vocals, accordion, piano, pandeiro
Green Bouzard–violin, chorus
Henry Spruth– bass, chorus
Stephen Gregg– percussion, chorus

This alchemical mix of folk musicians will swiftly sweep you off your feet with their sweet harmonies. Sister Species shrewdly blends both classically-trained and self-taught musicians into a swirl of fluid folk and catchy riffs, carried on the haunting, floating, and satisfyingly full harmonies of the Kastrul sisters.

Tickets are just $10 in advance, and $15 at the door. Seating in the Inner Sanctum is limited to 25-35, depending on how many musicians there are. It is an intimate and amazing space to experience the power of music. Click here to reserve your seats to see Crow Call, Ellie Bryan and Sister Species or call the Eye of Horus at 612-872-1292.

Live at the Eye May through September (so far)

Briar Live at the Eye May 16th 2014Briar – May 16th (Friday) 7:00pm-9:00pm

About Briar: Jay has played the Renaissance Festival for over 30 years, and Anita has played there for 18 years. What do they play? English Folk Songs, Murder Ballads. Think British and Irish Folk Music, Jethro Tull, and an Edward Gorey / RenFair attitude. When asked, they don’t say they are a Band. Then what are they? Well, they say they like crows, so maybe they are a Murder of Musicians. Reserve your seats for Briar – Live at the Eye>

Celia Live at the Eye June 6thCelia – June 6th (Friday) 7:00pm-9:00pm

Celia has been described as “A cross between an Earthy Enya, Joan Baez, and Tina Fey.” She dishes up the most delicious concoction of the silly and sacred. With powerful, heart-felt vocals and wacky comedic improvisations, the audience never knows what will happen with Celia on stage. She’s Red-headed Renaissance Woman, Celia is a singer/songwriter, actress, and storyteller who will leave you moved by beauty and enchanted with laughter. Both are equally sacred. Reserve your seats for Celia – Live at the Eye>

Brian Henke Live at the Eye

Brian Henke – July 12th (Saturday) 7:00pm-9:00pm

Brian’s unique guitar style has been called everything from Folk to New Age to Neo-Classical to Pastoral or as Brian likes to call it “a big stewpot of everything, stirred up, simmered and served to taste.” His music appeals to anyone who like their music lyrical, thought provoking and performed with virtuosity. Through it all is an undercurrent of spirituality and mysticism that Brian says is very much apart of the creative process. Reserve your seats for Brian Henke – Live at the Eye>

Murphey's Midnight RoundersMurphey’s Midnight Rounders – September 5th (Friday) 7:00pm-9:00pm

Murphey’s Midnight Rounders is an Acoustic/Americana band with their feet firmly planted in Folk music. Their original material runs the gamut of human emotion while their vocal harmonies have an impact that’s fresh and inspiring.
Brad Murphey has distinguished himself as a versatile songwriter, arranger and guitarist. Along with Murphey is Teresa Frank on vocals and, at times, Mandolin. She also is a percussionist, playing the Bodhran, Congas and Djembe. Bonnie Hanna-Powers brings bright and expressive harmonies, and her lead vocals lend a blues quality to the mix. Reserve your seats for Murphey’s Midnight Rounders – Live at the Eye>

We are still waiting on confirmation for additional performances, so keep in touch! Sign up for our newsletter, like us on facebook, or just book a seat for any of the performances and we’ll be sure to send you notices for future concerts. We consider ourselves blessed to be able to provide a space where artists can share their talents and listeners can ride the sound waves. This is why we created the Inner Sanctum. Please share this article with your social networks, thanks!

The Witchy Songs Playlist

  Posted By admin

Here is an eclectic mix of music that modern witches can enjoy. With 100+ songs, the list covers witchcraft, voodoo, divination, and more for hours of witchy goodness. The playlist spans both genres and generations, and definitely explores stereotypes. Please note that this is not devotional music, though there are some pagan artists and songs which do honor and come from the craft, including Wendy Rule, S.J. Tucker, Emerald Rose and Damh the Bard. If you do want to explore pagan music, check out the selection at the Eye of Horus.

This Witchysongs playlist is mostly just for fun and features a variety of artists, from Frank Sinatra singing Witchcraft, to the Wytches by Inkubus Sukkubus, and Krokus is followed by Jethro Tull.  So, sit for a spell and circle ’round and tune in to the witchy music vibe via this Spotify playlist. If you like it, remember to share… thanks!

Wendy Rule Returns (updated)

  Posted By admin

On July 5th, Australian Wendy Rule and Minnesota Nordic Roots performer Kari Tauring are re-united in this double-concert at Patrick’s Cabaret.

UPDATE. For those of you who think this is just your run-of-the mill concert, check out this video featuring Wendy calling the quarters and Kari playing her Stav in the background. This was from a prior Minneapolis visit. This is so much more than performance. It is ritual.

Both are modern mystics who draw on ancient myth to lead their audiences on sonic trip to the otherworld, invoking nature, fairies and dieties, as well as just providing great music. As a bonus, Wendy is offering her Ritual Music Meditation Workshop on the full moon before the concert.

Presented by Eye of Horus Metaphysical, this intimate double-concert event at 120 seat Patrick’s Cabaret features two extraordinary performers whose music has been called otherworldly and transcendent.

What: Concert at Patrick’s Cabaret
When: Thursday, July 5th 7:30-10:00pm
Where: Patrick’s Cabaret
Tickets: $17 in advance (buy online from the Eye) or call 612-872-1292
