This week’s Harrow card, The Hidden Truth, is usually a very welcome sight in a reading. On the card itself, we see a wizard in full robes and hat. His right index finger is pointing to a passage in an open book, while his left index finger points above him. A flame burns on the left finger like a candle.
The Hidden Truth is a card of both action and contemplation. Of all the cards from the suit of Books, it represents some of the most active forms of intelligence and knowledge. Being aligned Lawful Good, it is also a card of harmony and completion. At its root, The Hidden Truth is about seeing past the intellectual noise of everyday life to discover a greater truth that will enhance our lives, but like all Harrow cards, there is a much deeper meaning than that.
In order to discover The Hidden Truth, we must actively seek it. This is not knowledge that will find us first. The wizard on the card is clearly a man who has spent years studying the magical arts, and it is only now that he finds the secrets he has been looking for. Similarly, The Hidden Truth represents a discovery that is part of a broader journey; it is a reward that is earned more than it is a prize that is given. While that distinction may seem trivial, understanding the profound difference between the two is to understand the nature of The Hidden Truth and its secrets.
The song “Sat In Your Lap” by Kate Bush is an excellent demonstration of the practical side of The Hidden Truth’s nature. In the lyrics, Bush plays a character who is frustrated by people who are able to reach their goals while also being unable to make progress toward her own. The character resents those who say that knowledge is something that landed (or “sat”) in someone’s lap. What she fails to see, however, is the hard work that others have put in to get their own Hidden Truth. It may look easy to discover, but in reality it takes a tremendous amount of work.
If The Hidden Truth appears in a spread misaligned, it generally means that the knowledge we seek is being actively hidden from us by outside forces, either with or without mal intent. This makes our search all the harder and makes it easy to get discouraged. We must keep in mind, however, that The Hidden Truth is always there, and we can always find it, even if it takes us forever and a day to do so.
Blue dumortierite is a stone that allows us to “speak our truth” and is an excellent companion in our quest for knowledge. It aids our intellect and intuition, as well as our mental discipline, and allows us to express our knowledge to the world. Amazonite also helps us discover The Hidden Truth, but its power comes from encouraging us to trust in ourselves and embrace who and what we are. It allows us to integrate all parts of ourselves into a more harmonious and confident whole.
Bright blessings, and may the cards be in your favor.
The Harrow deck is part of the Pathfinder RPG and is a fun alternative to a traditional tarot deck both for those familiar with the game, or those looking for a different framework for divination.
